Guided Group 4×4 Tours in Wales
Explore the green lanes, mountain landscapes and remote scenery of Wales in your own 4×4, accompanied by an experienced professional guide.
Off Road Adventure Travel’s scheduled group tours bring together a small number of friendly 4×4 owners for carefully planned days across Mid Wales, North Wales and the Welsh Borders.
Group tours start from £120 per vehicle per day, including VAT.
Discover Wales in your own 4×4
A guided group tour allows you to enjoy the driving and scenery without spending hours researching routes, navigation and access.
Each tour follows a professionally prepared itinerary combining legal green lanes with scenic roads, remote landscapes and interesting places. Routes are selected according to the area, expected conditions and advertised level of difficulty.
You will drive your own vehicle as part of a small group led by Adam Hearne in a fully equipped guide vehicle.
The friendly small-group format provides support when it is needed while allowing everyone to enjoy a relaxed and memorable Welsh adventure.
What to expect from a group tour
Your tour may include:

- A friendly group of like-minded 4×4 owners
- A full day of varied driving in your own vehicle
The precise route, difficulty, meeting point, timings and vehicle requirements are provided on each individual tour page.

Scheduled group tours normally include:
- An experienced and qualified 4×4 guide
- A professionally researched and prepared route
- A fully equipped guide and support vehicle
- PMR radios for communication during the tour
- Practical guidance throughout the day
- Advice about route and vehicle suitability before booking

Small groups for a better experience
Group sizes are deliberately kept small.
A smaller convoy is easier to manage, reduces delays and provides a more personal experience for everyone. It also allows Adam to offer individual guidance and keep the group informed about changing route conditions.
Tours welcome individuals, couples, friends and families. You do not need to arrive as part of an existing group.
Where do the tours take place?
Scheduled group tours explore different parts of Wales and the Welsh Borders.
Destinations and routes can include:
- Strata Florida
- The Cambrian Mountains
- Elan Valley and Claerwen
- Llandovery and Mid Wales
- Rhayader and the surrounding countryside
- Bwlch Nant yr Arian and Nant y Moch
- Coed y Brenin
- Selected routes across North Wales
- The Welsh Borders
- Other carefully selected areas
Not every location is included on every tour. Check the individual event page for the route description, start area and expected finish location.
Is my vehicle suitable?
Tours are intended for capable, road-legal 4×4 vehicles.
Regular participants drive vehicles including:
- INEOS Grenadier
- Land Rover Defender
- Land Rover Discovery
- Toyota Hilux
- Toyota Land Cruiser
- Ford Ranger
- Isuzu D-Max
- Mitsubishi L200
- Other suitable four-wheel-drive vehicles
Vehicle requirements vary between routes. Some tours are suitable for relatively standard vehicles, while more demanding routes may require low range, suitable ground clearance and all-terrain tyres.
Please read the requirements on the individual tour page carefully. If you are uncertain, contact Adam with details of your vehicle, tyres, modifications and previous experience before booking.
No vehicle is suitable for every route or every set of conditions.
Do I need previous green-lane experience?
Not necessarily.
Some routes are suitable for drivers with limited green-lane experience, while others are more technical and require greater confidence and vehicle capability.
Each tour description explains the expected difficulty. Adam can advise which tour is most suitable for you and your vehicle.
The aim is to help you enjoy your vehicle, understand its capabilities and build experience in a supported environment.

Tour prices and booking
Scheduled UK group tours start from £120 per vehicle per day, including VAT.
The price is normally charged per vehicle rather than per person, making a tour suitable for individuals, couples and families travelling together.
Prices can vary for special events, multi-day tours and overseas adventures. The exact price, deposit and payment terms are shown on each individual tour page.
Some tours sell out quickly, so advance booking is recommended.
CHECK TOUR DATES AND AVAILABILITY
Prefer a private tour?
If the scheduled dates do not suit you, or you would prefer a more personal experience, a private guided tour can be arranged.
Private tours offer greater flexibility over the date, route, location and pace of the day. They are ideal for individuals, couples, families, friends, clubs and vehicle-owner groups.
Private UK tours start from £360 per day.
Prefer to explore independently?
4×4 Wales Adventure Packs are available for drivers who want to navigate a professionally prepared route independently.
Depending on the selected pack, contents can include a downloadable GPX route, detailed roadbook, Adventure Guide, practical route information and Adam’s personal recommendations.
Adventure Packs allow you to travel at your own pace and turn a route into a complete self-guided Welsh adventure.

Frequently asked questions
Do I drive my own vehicle?
Yes. These are self-drive guided tours for owners of suitable, road-legal 4×4 vehicles. Adam leads the group in a separate guide vehicle.
How much does a group tour cost?
Scheduled UK group tours start from £120 per vehicle per day, including VAT. Check the individual event page for the exact price.
Can passengers come with me?
Yes. Passengers, couples and families are welcome, subject to the legal seating capacity of your vehicle and any requirements shown on the event page.
Are dogs welcome?
Dogs are welcome on many tours, although they may need to be kept on a lead at certain locations. Check the individual tour information before booking.
What tyres do I need?
Requirements vary by route. All-terrain tyres are recommended and may be a minimum requirement for some tours. Road tyres or low-profile tyres may be unsuitable for more demanding routes.
Will my vehicle get scratched?
Green lanes can be narrow and vegetation may contact the vehicle. Light scratching, tyre damage or minor damage to wheels and bodywork is possible. Read the individual route information and ask before booking if vehicle condition is a concern.
What should I bring?
Bring suitable outdoor clothing, footwear, food and drinks for the day. A packed lunch is normally required because many lunch stops are in remote areas.
What happens if weather or access conditions change?
Routes may be changed before or during a tour because of weather, temporary restrictions, ground conditions, safety concerns or other circumstances. Alternative routes will be used where appropriate.
Can beginners join?
Some tours are suitable for less-experienced drivers, while technical routes may not be recommended for beginners. Contact Adam for advice if you are unsure.
Can I join on my own?
Yes. Individuals are welcome and the small-group format makes it easy to meet other 4×4 owners.

We had a great day out with Adam this weekend. Despite the howling Welsh weather and the edges of storm Freya, we had a great day. Adam was really lovely, incredibly helpful, and totally sodden from standing out in the rain spotting us through the tricky parts. We all made it around without damage to our vehicles, largely due to his immense knowledge of every possible hindrance to our journey. I highly recommend Off-road adventure travel, and Adam in particular.
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed and hope to see you again.
Hi Adam, I have no phone signal at home..I. Have General Grabber TR fitted on my Defender 90 will these be ok ? I will try to call you over the weekend …the joys of living in wales with no phone signal…
Hi, i am a lady Defender 90 owner, but never took my 90 off Road has it is my every day and work vehicle and worried I may damage it.lol…I’m new to the 4×4 scene…is the off road course difficult? Or suitable for a complete novice? We’re in wales is the course? I am a single lady so would be on my own so would I be welcomed? Or is it really a man based tour…many thanks Ann
Hi Ann. Ours tours are suitable for individuals, families and groups. We cater for all levels of ability and are on hand to give guidance. The December tour will suit your vehicle as we have a couple of ‘shiny’ vehicles joining us. We will be starting in Llandovery on 28/12 and Rhayader on 29/12.
Ok brilliant, mine may not be new but she is my pride and joy, but i so want to do a off road drive. Do you need to have a snorkel fitted? Any special equipment needed?
No special equipment required although we would recommend an A/T tyre. You’re welcome to give me a call tomorrow after midday to have a chat about routes and suitability if you want. 07444 595812. Adam
I have general grabber TR ? Are those suitable?
