If you have enjoyed one of my guided tours, you will know how much there is to discover when you leave the main roads and take time to explore Wales. But a tour date will not always fit your plans. Sometimes you want to head out with your own friends or family and travel at your own pace.
That is why I have created a growing collection of self-guided 4×4 Adventure Packs through 4×4 Wales. They give you a planned day’s adventure to enjoy in your own vehicle, on a date that works for you.

A complete day out, planned for you
An Adventure Pack gives you more than a GPX line to follow. Each pack combines GPX navigation, a Digital Roadbook, an A5 Adventure Guide and route updates. Together, they help you prepare for the drive and make more of the places you pass through.
You choose when to set off, who travels with you and where to stop along the way. You drive the route without a guide or convoy, so it is important to read the pack carefully, check the latest updates and make your own assessment of access and conditions before travelling.
Where could your next adventure take you?
The collection currently includes three different ways to explore Mid Wales:
Strata Florida — Adventure 001
SF26-001 is a 75-mile circular adventure combining the Old Coach Road, Cambrian Mountain scenery and the Strata Florida landscape. It is a full day aimed at drivers looking for a more demanding route and one of Wales’ best-known green lane areas.
Cambrian Mountains — Adventure 002
CM26-001 offers another journey into the remote scenery of the Cambrian Mountains. If you enjoy wide landscapes and the experience of travelling through Mid Wales, take a look at its route description and vehicle guidance to see whether it is right for you.
Llandovery to Elan Valley — Adventure 003
LE26-001 is an approximately 81-mile, point-to-point adventure from Llandovery to Caban Coch Dam in the Elan Valley. Allow around 6–8 hours including stops. The route begins near Myddfai, crosses Mid Wales and finishes with a scenic approach to the dam. Its stated experience level is 2/5, easy to moderate challenge.

Guided tour or self-guided adventure?
I still love leading groups through Wales. On a guided tour, I take care of the route and navigation while you enjoy driving in your own 4×4 alongside other owners.
The Adventure Packs give you another option: a prepared route that you can drive independently, with your own companions and your own timetable. You can join me for a guided day, head out with an Adventure Pack another time, or enjoy both.
Get ready before you go
Welsh weather, ground conditions and access can change. Before starting any self-guided route, read the Adventure Guide and route updates, check the current legal status of the lanes, and make sure the route suits your vehicle and experience. Leave enough time for stops and for conditions that may slow the journey.
