GALICIA 2018

In response to those interested in Spanish trips here’s an account of a great trip we made to Galicia with #offroadadventuretravel in September last year

We only had a week so kicked off with overnight ferry from Portsmouth and landing in Santander the following evening stayed locally At Santillana de la Mer. Day 1 was a long drive initially south then west to get us over to the general area we wished to explore but largely we found ourselves following the Camino de Compostela- a long distance pilgrims path culminating initially at the impressive Santiago de Compostela and then for the hardy the headland at Finnistere – all worthy of a few hours exploration.

Plenty of tracks in the hills and round the coast offered a huge variety of terrain and vistas, and with the luxury of having them pretty much to ourselves. With time of the essence we opted for hotels to save time on camping/cooking/packing which was a genius of an idea. Hotels were generally very good and the local food was outstanding and incredibly reasonably priced . Reckon our most expensive meal was £30 a head for 3 courses including wine!

Unfortunately the 110 let us down at quite possibly the furthest point from the Uk but here is where you really appreciate the benefit of a guided trip. Adam @ offroadadventuretravel really stepped up to the plate here. He knew exactly how to deal with the situation and the likely sequence of events that would ensue so his decision to get us to civilisation to wait for the AA was inspired- because at least we had access to food, toilets and WiFi! Despite the loss of the vehicle we were able to transfer our gear to his car and continue our trip. Although a few hours of off-roading were lost he took it all in his stride and was quick to quell any embarrassment we felt about the vehicle letting us down. The vehicle was returned 48 hours later with Adam dropping us at the garage and then he stayed with us as we embarked on the 350 mile return trip to the ferry with a clock very much ticking. Although the repair failed half way – even at 2am in the morning Adams professionalism shone through, staying with us till the AA recovery reappeared, hotel accommodation had been sorted and ferry travel rearranged. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable week despite vehicle challenges because of a 5 star service. We will definitely be returning to Galicia and we will definitely be customers of #offroadadventuretravel again – having just secured our place for the Pyrenees this June!

Crossing the Val D’Aran, Spain by 4×4

Today’s journey left the beautiful town of Luchon in France and went through the Val D’Aran to Llavorsi, Catalunya, Spain.

A picture is worth a thousand words…

The open gravel track at the ski resort of Baqueira Beret narrowed through pine forests.

After a day of breathtaking scenery and a siesta by the babbling River Noguera Pallaresa, we bimbled down the valley and set up camp for the night at Camping Riberies, Llavorsi.

Perfecto!

This is an ideal location for those with an adventurous spirit who want to explore the additional activities in the area e.g. white water rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, horse riding and hiking trails.

For your information, our next 4×4 tour in this region starts on Saturday 4th August 2018.

Our 4×4 Adventure in the Sierra de Guara, Aragon.

Our American clients, Nathan and Susannah, were eager to make tracks from Camping Castillo de Loarre to explore the Aragon region of Spain, as it was their last day off road before heading back to Paris.

The newly built tunnels and Autovia took us north from Huesca towards Sabiñánigo to a height of 4379 feet, giving us spectacular views of the Pyrenees mountain peaks. We headed east towards the remote village of Laguarta, in the heart of the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park.

Imposing rock bordered the narrow, winding road which climbed through varying terrain and followed the path of the Rio Guarga.

We resisted the guidance of a local cow, who was keen to encourage the use of local facilities…

… but our next helpful guide wasn’t kidding around when directing us off the beaten track!

A dusty forest track, river fording and a long rock crawl climb added excitement to the journey. The tall pine trees provided some cover from the scorching sun.

We passed the ruins of the abandoned village of Torrolluela del Obico.

After a picnic near Alquézar with views over the canyon we moved on to our final few trails. Once again, climbing steep rocky tracks with olive trees alongside.

The Ermita (chapel) de San Benito provided a high point with stunning views over the striking blue waters of the lakes in the valley below.

A steep descent to the base of the valley proved challenging with many sharp bends and a loose surface.

It was time to bid farewell to Nathan and Susannah, great travelling companions who take away new experiences and memories from their off road adventure.

Hasta la vista.

Did you miss our Wild Wales 4×4 Explorer weekend June 2018?

So, we had a great group of clients join us for the weekend. We got to drive some new routes for many and some of the old favourites that Wales has to offer : Strata Florida, Lower Claerwen, Rhayader golf links (anyone know why it’s called that?!) and Soar y Mynydd to name a few.

Of course, the mighty Toyota Hilux led the group through fantastic scenery and challenging routes.

Our group consisted of a Land Rover defender 90, defender 110, Toyota Land Cruiser Amazon, Mitsubishi Shogun and the Discovery 3 (with all the kit!)

We love all of our tours across Europe, but Wales still has something special to offer. Ideal for novices and more experienced drivers alike.

If you want any details or would like to book on our next tour then contact;

or email adam@offroadadventuretravel.com

Don’t forget we’ve got upcoming tours in the Pyrenees, Galicia and a great autumn/winter schedule in Wales, including a New Year’s Eve full package!
