A Guided 4×4 Adventure Through Mid Wales

Explore Mid Wales in your own 4×4 on a full-day guided adventure from Llandovery to the Elan Valley.

Our planned route combines Trecastle Roman Road, Crychan Forest and the green lane near Llandrindod Wells Golf Course, before continuing towards Rhayader and the reservoir scenery of the Elan Valley. Enjoy varied green lane driving, historic routes and remote Welsh landscapes, with experienced guidance throughout the day.

Ideal for drivers looking to explore with support, including those with less green-laning experience and a suitable vehicle.

This is a one-way tour, finishing near Rhayader. Please allow time for your onward journey.

What to Expect

We begin in Llandovery with a welcome, an introduction to the day and a safety briefing before setting off through Mid Wales.

The day combines rocky tracks, forest lanes and scenic connecting roads, with opportunities to enjoy the landscape and learn more about the places we pass. Your guide will offer practical advice on driving the lanes and using your vehicle’s capabilities.

We’ll stop for a packed lunch along the route before continuing towards the Elan Valley.

The itinerary may change to reflect access restrictions, weather, ground conditions and the needs of the group.

Is My 4×4 Suitable?

You’ll need to bring your own capable, properly maintained and road-legal 4×4, with:

All-terrain tyres as a minimum, in good condition
Low-range gearing
Good ground clearance
A manufacturer-specified wading depth of at least 500 mm
Wheels no larger than 20 inches
Tyres with a profile of 55 or higher

Standard vehicles are welcome where they meet these requirements. Suitability depends on the vehicle’s specification and conditions on the day.

Drivers must hold a valid driving licence, and vehicles must have appropriate insurance, tax and an MOT where required.

Useful Information

Driver experience: Suitable for less experienced green-lane drivers with a suitable vehicle. Guidance is provided throughout the day.
Passengers: Individuals, couples, friends and families are welcome. Everyone must have a proper seat and seat belt or appropriate child restraint.
Dogs: Welcome, provided they are safely secured while travelling and kept on a lead outside the vehicle.
Food and drink: Bring a packed lunch and enough drinks for the day.
Clothing: Bring warm layers, waterproofs and sturdy footwear suitable for a winter day outdoors.
Fuel: Arrive with enough fuel for a full day’s driving and your onward journey.
Vehicle care: Narrow lanes, vegetation and uneven ground can cause scratches or damage, including to paintwork, tyres and wheels.

Winter Conditions & Responsible Driving

January can bring wet ground, ice, snow and reduced daylight. Although much of the planned route is rocky or firm underfoot, conditions can change and sections may need to be altered or omitted.

We follow legal routes, respect other countryside users and adapt the day to the conditions. Water crossings will only be considered where assessed as suitable; a vehicle’s stated wading depth does not guarantee that a crossing is safe.

Full payment is required to secure your place. The price is £130 per vehicle per day, including VAT and passengers.
