What to Expect

We begin in Machynlleth with a welcome, an introduction to the route and a safety briefing before setting off onto the North Wales lanes.

The planned day includes Horseshoe Lane, Carn March Arthur, Happy Valley and Bomber Lane, linked by scenic roads through the surrounding countryside. We’ll stop for a packed lunch along the route, with opportunities to enjoy the landscape and take photographs where suitable.

Adam will lead the group and offer practical guidance on approaching obstacles and using your vehicle’s capabilities.

Happy Valley includes extreme side slopes that may cause panel damage. These sections require careful vehicle positioning and experience of driving technical terrain.

This is a demanding driving day. It is not suitable for novice green-lane drivers or vehicles whose owners want to avoid scratches or damage.

The order and inclusion of lanes may change to reflect access restrictions, daylight, weather, ground conditions and the needs of the group.

What’s Included

  • A guided day led by Adam, an experienced and qualified 4×4 instructor with over 35 years’ experience
  • A fully equipped guide vehicle carrying emergency, first aid and recovery equipment
  • Practical driving guidance and local knowledge throughout the day
  • Radios supplied for communication within the group
  • Garmin inReach satellite communication equipment carried by the guide

Vehicle hire, fuel, food and accommodation are not included.

Is My 4×4 Suitable?

Vehicle Width Restrictions

This tour is not suitable for wider vehicles, including new Land Rover Defenders, INEOS Grenadiers or similarly sized 4×4s.

The narrow passages and extreme side slopes leave limited clearance, increasing the risk of bodywork and panel damage. Lifts or other modifications do not overcome this width restriction.

Defender eligibility refers to classic Land Rover Defenders. Other suitably narrow, prepared 4×4s may be considered, but you must contact Adam for approval before booking.

This tour is primarily for Land Rover Defenders. Other suitably lifted or modified 4×4 vehicles may be accepted, but you must contact Adam for approval before booking.

Vehicles must be properly maintained and road legal, with:

  • Low-range gearing
  • Good ground clearance suitable for technical terrain
  • Good-quality all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres, in good condition
  • A manufacturer-specified wading depth of at least 500 mm
  • Wheels no larger than 20 inches
  • Tyres with a profile of 55 or higher
  • A serviceable full-size spare wheel
  • NO ROOF TENTS

Drivers must hold a valid driving licence, and vehicles must have appropriate insurance, tax and an MOT where required.

Meeting the general minimum requirements does not automatically make a vehicle suitable for these lanes. Vehicle dimensions, clearance, modifications and driver experience also matter.

Please read our Is My 4×4 Suitable? guide and contact Adam if you have questions about this particular tour.

Important Vehicle Damage Notice

These lanes can be narrow, overgrown, uneven and challenging. Paintwork scratches are likely, and more substantial damage is possible.

Happy Valley has extreme side slopes that may cause panel damage. Vehicle lean and limited clearance can bring body panels into contact with the banks or surrounding terrain.

Vegetation, rocks and tight passages may also affect bodywork, mirrors, wheels, tyres and underbody components.

Guidance and support cannot remove these risks. Please consider your vehicle and your willingness to accept damage before booking.

Useful Information

  • Driver experience: Previous experience of technical green lanes is required. This tour is not suitable for novice drivers.
  • Passengers: Welcome within the vehicle’s legal seating capacity. Everyone must have a proper seat and seat belt or appropriate child restraint.
  • Dogs: Welcome, provided they are safely secured while travelling and kept on a lead outside the vehicle.
  • Food and drink: Bring a packed lunch, drinks and snacks for the day.
  • Clothing: Bring warm layers, waterproofs and sturdy footwear suitable for a winter day outdoors.
  • Fuel: Arrive with a full tank and allow enough fuel for your onward journey.

Winter Conditions & Responsible Driving

December can bring heavy rain, ice, snow and reduced daylight. Conditions can change quickly, and sections of the planned route may need to be altered or omitted.

We follow legal routes, respect other countryside users and adapt the day to the conditions. Water crossings will only be considered where assessed as suitable; a vehicle’s stated wading depth does not guarantee that a crossing is safe.

Please follow your guide’s instructions throughout the tour.

Booking & Payment

Full payment is required to secure your place. The price is £130 per vehicle per day, including VAT and passengers.

If you are bringing a vehicle other than a Land Rover Defender, please obtain approval from Adam before booking.

Gift vouchers are also available. Please contact us before booking if you would like to redeem a voucher.

Deposit options apply only to our UK five-day and overseas tours.

Cancellation and booking-change requests are subject to our terms and conditions. No cancellations or changes can be made with less than 21 days’ notice under our booking policy. Please read the full terms before booking.

We recommend suitable travel insurance covering cancellation and your participation in the tour.
